AI in radio broadcasting: Doria in Dario

Doria

In the beginning of 2023, DPG Media’s radio department recognized the transformative potential of AI and set out to shake up their operations. Initially, the use of AI was limited to marketing tasks like creating stock images. However, DPG Media saw an opportunity to integrate AI more deeply into their daily functions.

All radio-stations of DPG Media work with an internally developed production tool called "Dario". This tool allows the DJs and producers to prepare and cooperate on their radio show, communicate with listeners through polls & messages, and manage their music database and charts & vote lists. But DPG Media noticed a gap between their AI-savvy producers and those unfamiliar with these tools. That is why they introduced Doria, an AI assistant, into their in-house production tool, Dario. This integration aimed to empower DJs, producers and sound designers by providing them with content ideas and quizzes. DPG Media even embedded a chat interface within Dario, offering instant access to AI suggestions matching their station's tone of voice.

Besides that, DPG Media also implemented automatic transcription for listener audio messages by converting raw inputs into searchable text. This significantly improves the efficiency of content curation for DJ’s. DJ’s also get the opportunity to send genuine sounding AI-generated replies to listener interactions.

Doria’s final extension, called Doria Copilot, is still in the works and acts like an overnight producer by compiling relevant information for the next day’s broadcast.

At the moment there are still some complications with fact checking in Dario, so DJs are advised to doublecheck their information on the internet before they deliver it to the audience. DPG Media addresses this problem with better training and guidelines. Adapting AI to Dutch and Flemish also proved some difficulties, meaning they need to focus more on further multilingual development. But despite these challenges, DPG Media’s Doria significantly transformed the operation, enhancing creativity, efficiency and listener engagement.
