Mike Nugent

Deputy Director of Technology

Mike has worked for the broadcasting industry for over 25 years in engineering and management positions, promoting emerging technologies in content production and delivery. He currently holds the position of Deputy Director of Technology at ERT, the Greek Broadcasting Corporation, managing technical development & planning and coordinating technological growth activities. He is also a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Technical Committee, where technical evolution is pursued collectively for the interest of all EBU members. Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Rice University, Texas, USA, and a master’s degree in Business Administration from ALBA, Athens, Greece.

ERT is the Greek public radio and television broadcaster, located in Athens. The company was founded in 1938 and operates 3 national television channels, 5 national and 21 regional radio channels. ERT as many broadcasters do, faces many challenges including budget restrictions, technological disruptions, and competition from major online platforms. To overcome these circumstances, it aspires to become smarter, more efficient, to explore new ideas and innovate. The Sandbox Hub has helped ERT to establish such an innovative environment, contributing towards the sustainability and growth of its organization. ERT now promotes innovation in the media with its own innovation hub, the ERT MediaLab, aiming at start-ups, research organizations and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with innovative ideas related to technology, journalism, social networks, and content. Participants through the MediaLab can develop and evaluate their products utilizing ERT's know-how, facilities, and technological equipment.
